A Preliminary Study of DNA Ploidy in Gastrointestinal Cancer

Abstract
The flow cytometric study is considered to be an important field of research in clarifying the relation between DNA ploid patterns and biological activity of cancer cells. the measurement of cellular DNA content by flow cytometer is emerging as a
diagnostic and prognostic aid in various human tumors.
This study was performed to define the relation between DNA ploid patterns and clinicohistologic parameters in gastric and colorectal cancers.
The measurement of the cellular DNA content and analysis of DNA ploid patterns of fresh specimens from resected 54 gastric and 41 colorecrtal cancers were performed with DNA flow cytometer.
In gastric cancer, there was tendency that lymph node invasion, depth of cancer invasion and advanced stages showed more nondiploidy and in colorectal cancer, there was tendency that higher CEA level and advanced stages showed more nondiploidy.
The results of this study show that the measurement of cellular DNA content is considered as one method of determining the biological activity of gastric and colorectal cancers.
